The East and West joined by rail 150 years ago

To be fair, the First Transcontinental Railroad line (completed May 10, 1869) did not literally run coast-to-coast, but the connected systems revolutionized the settlement and economy of the American West, and made transporting passengers and goods coast-to-coast considerably quicker and less expensive.
