Songwriter and guitarist Bob Weir was just 16 years old when he stumbled into a jam session with 21-year-old Jerry Garcia in Palo Alto on New Year's Eve 1963. The two decided to start a jug band that by 1965 became the Grateful Dead. Weir's family announced Saturday that he succumbed to lung issues after courageously beating cancer.
