Coltrane died of liver cancer, at just 40 years old, on July 17, 1967. Among his many honors are a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a special Pulitzer Prize. He remains one of jazz music's most influential figures. He's even been venerated by te St. John Coltrane African Orthodox Church of San Francisco.
