Initially, the Ford Motor Company offered 8-track tape players as a factory-installed option in 1966-model Mustangs, Thunderbirds, and Lincolns. Within a year, Ford became the first automaker to offer 8-tracks in their entire line of vehicles.The format remained popular until the mid-'70s, when it was displaced by the compact cassette format.
