40 Years Ago: For Goth-godfather Ian Curtis and Joy Division

On May 18, 1980, on the eve of the band's first U.S./Canada tour, Joy Division vocalist Ian Curtis took his own life at only 23. Their second and final album, Closer, was released two months later; it and the single "Love Will Tear Us Apart" became their highest charting releases. The remaining members regrouped under the name New Order, and were successful throughout the next decade, blending post-punk with electronic and dance music influences. We're featuring Joy Division and New Order on these channels.
