Born Jaime Royal Robertson in Toronto in 1943, he left home to pursue a career in music at age 16. As a founding member of The Band, Robertson turned their final performance into a launching pad for his career as a film composer. "The Last Waltz" was his first collaboration with director Martin Scorsese. Their work together continued through a number of dramatic films, including Raging Bull (1980), The King of Comedy (1983), Casino (1995), The Departed (2006), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) and The Irishman (2019). Robertson wrote some of The Band's best-known songs, including "The Weight" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." Robbie Robertson died Wednesday after a long illness.
